The Industrial Chair in Bioplastics will establish a laboratory equipped with "mini-machines" to study and process bioplastics.
One of the problems in this type of studies is that some of bioplastics polymers exist, for the time being, in small quantities (such as polymers obtained via biotechnology route).

Micro compounder

Micro-compounder or a “micro-extruder” is a part of gram-to-kilogram scale Polymer Processing Platform which is under development in Cemef.
To fully characterise the new polymers, from physico-chemical and structural properties to their processability and final end-use properties, there is the need to work with quantities of polymers from less than one gram up to several kilograms.

Micro-compounder allows mixing of lest than 10 cm3 of thermoplastic material.

 

Rheo-optics

Rheo-optics is a very interesting tool to visualize and study the changes in the morphology of complex fluids under flow. The complex fluids are immiscible blends, suspension, various soft and solid particles, etc.
Droplets deformation, rupture and coalescence, dispersion of nano-aggregates, release of solvent from soft particles, phase inversion in immiscible blends can be studied using rheo-optics.

Cemef uses rheo-optics for investigations of complex fluids and develops original rheo-optical systems.
