Summary:
This conference took place at CEMEF in the frame of the EPNOE network. Academic researchers and industrial members of EPNOE (120 persons in total) discussed the advances in their research work. Most of the presentations were given by PhD students and dealt with polysaccharides. Various topics were investigated, from chemical treatments to forming of films based on cellulose. As melting of such polymers is often impossible, a lot of presentations dealt with their dissolution and the rheological behaviour of these solutions. Ionic liquids were widely reported as a promising solvent of cellulose. Mechanical properties of films and of three-dimensional objects based on cellulose have also been reported.

19-24 September 2010 (La Teste de Buch, France):

38th Journées d’Etude des Polymères - JEPO 2010

Oral presentations:
- François Besson, Tatiana Budtova, «Study of Polymer Blends: Cellulose Ester / Polyolefin».
- Thibaut Gérard, Tatiana Budtova, «Preparation and characterization of blends of Polyhydroxyalkanoates and Polylactide».

The objective of JEPO is to gather young PhD students in all fields of polymers each year. Each participant (about 50 this year) is invited to present his research work in an oral communication. JEPO 2010 took place near Arcachon and was organised by the LCPO (Laboratory of Chemistry of Organic Polymers, Bordeaux).

Those five days allowed us to exchange with PhD students working on various topics, with academic researchers and also with R&D industry scientists (Michelin, L’Oréal and BASF). In particular, we have observed the multidisciplinarity of research in the field of polymers (chemical synthesis, formulation, processing, study of physical properties…).

We have also noticed the increasing importance of renewable polymers. Many presentations dealt with starch, polylactide, polyhydroxyalkanoates, casein, biobased polyethers…
A majority of presentations were about polymer synthesis. For instance, one can cite the growing interest on “click chemistry”. Niche applications with a large added value (in the medical field for example) have also been widely reported.

The summer school was made of conferences given by specialists in order to share the knowledge about fibres such as flax and hemp and about their growth, their mechanical properties, and their adhesion with matrix in composites.
The aim of the work-shop after the summer school was to present and discuss the results with a multidisciplinary approach (biology, chemistry, physics, mechanics…). For example, we assisted to a lecture on the durability of a biocomposite PLA/flax in the see or to the replacement of the soundboard of a violin by a composite balsa/flax.
